Daily commuting in Lagos is often challenging due to a combination of factors and inconsistent transportation systems. Many residents face unpredictable travel conditions that not only extend commute times but also significantly increase daily expenses.
To address these ongoing issues, TradeCard, in collaboration with HAEF (Harvesters Africa Empowerment Foundation), introduced the Routes of Hope initiative. The program is designed to improve access to transportation across selected key routes and support a smoother, more manageable commuting experience for people who depend on daily travel for work, education, and other essential activities.
Why Routes of Hope Initiative Matters in Lagos?
Transportation is one of the most significant daily challenges in Lagos, directly impacting how people work, study, and manage their time. With rising fares, inconsistent transport availability, and long travel hours, commuting has become both stressful and expensive for a large portion of residents.
These challenges often force workers and students to adjust their daily routines, leave earlier than necessary, or spend more than they originally planned just to move across the city. Over time, this creates added financial pressure and reduces overall productivity and energy levels.
In this context, Routes of Hope plays an important role by introducing more structured transport support on key routes. It helps improve commuting consistency, reduces uncertainty in daily travel, and eases some of the pressure associated with moving around Lagos.
Areas Covered by Routes of Hope
Our initiative currently operates along two key routes: the Sangotedo route and the Ogba route, covering both directions to ensure better commuter access and support.
These routes connect high-density residential areas with major commercial and transit points, making them essential for daily movement across Lagos. They also experience heavy commuter traffic, especially during peak morning and evening hours, along with common challenges such as rising transport fares, congestion delays, and limited reliable transport options.
The rides are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, ensuring structured and predictable commuting support for users along these routes.
Following a three-month performance review of the current rollout, Routes of Hope is expected to gradually expand to additional high-demand routes across Lagos, based on commuter needs and operational outcomes.
How Can Commuters Access the "Routes of Hope" Service?
The Routes of Hope service is powered through the Shuttlers app, where commuters can easily book their rides. To get started, commuters need to download the app, search for their route, select pickup and drop-off locations, and complete their booking directly on the platform.
Commuters can then access the buses by identifying active route operations and boarding at the designated pickup points along the corridor. In addition, updates regarding service availability, timings, and operational schedules will also be communicated through TradeCard’s official channels. This helps commuters stay informed in advance and plan their journeys more efficiently.
Early Impact and Real Results
Even in its early stage, Routes of Hope is already showing a clear impact. The feedback has been positive, with many users highlighting reduced travel costs, improved convenience, and less daily stress. This shows the initiative is addressing a real need for regular commuters.
The pilot phase has also helped identify areas for improvement, which will support better planning and efficiency going forward. Overall, the early results show strong potential for growth and expansion.
